OPT
(Options Post-Transplantation) for a New Start
A program directed by Susan Rees,
RN, BSN in partnership with the Alliance for Paired Donation,
Inc. and Owens Community College. The project is designed
to provide an opportunity for kidney transplant recipients
to acquire a college degree, maintain the health of their
kidney, increase their return-to-work rate and begin to
enjoy life again after transplantation.

Kidney Foundation
The National Kidney Foundation
website www.livingdonors.org was
recently ranked as the #1 website for living donation information
in a report published in Kidney International. This website
provides extensive information about living donation, including
the process, potential risks and benefits, emotional and
financial issues and outcomes. Living donors and potential
donors, along with family and friends, can learn more about
donation; share their experiences, stories and questions;
honor living donors; become educated about current issues,
events and policies; and more. An Email Discussion Group
is available for those who want ongoing support from other
donors, potential donors and family.
Living
Donor Assistance Program
Providing financial assistance to those who want to donate
an organ, priority is given to individuals not otherwise
able to afford the travel and subsistence expenses associated
with living organ donation

Network for Organ Sharing
UNOS Patient Services maintains, updates, and provides
transplantation and donation information to patients, family
members, friends, potential donors and medical professionals.
Information may be requested on topics such as:
-the transplantation and donation process
-national and center-specific transplant survival rates
-Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) recovery rates
-number of transplants by organ at each transplant center
UNOS Patient Services offers patient information
kits to assist patients, family members and friends in
making informed and knowledgeable decisions about organ
transplantation. The patient information kit includes:
-"What Every Patient Needs to Know" patient
booklet (available in both English and Spanish)
-a list of all U.S. transplant centers for the specified
organ
-a "snapshot" of the OPTN waiting list
-center-specific information request letter
-organ donor brochure card
